KepVideo — Video Downloader is a browser extension that finds the video streams a web page is playing, lets the user choose a quality and audio track, and saves the video to the user's computer as a single file. It works with HLS playlists (.m3u8) and with direct MP4/WebM files on general websites. Everything runs in the browser: segments are downloaded, decrypted when the stream uses standard AES-128, and joined into an MP4 without re-encoding.

How it works

  1. Detection. While a page plays a video, the extension notices playlist and video-file requests and also scans the page's media elements.
  2. Inspection. Each playlist is read to show its qualities, duration and number of segments. The stream whose duration matches the page's video is marked Recommended download; shorter streams (often adverts) stay visible.
  3. Download. On the download page the user picks quality, audio and file name. Segments are fetched in parallel (up to 8 requests) with timeouts and retries, then written in order to the chosen file.
  4. Assembly. MPEG-TS segments are remuxed to MP4 with mux.js; fragmented MP4 and separate audio tracks are combined directly. Resolution and codecs stay as delivered.

History

The project began in October 2026 as HLS Segment Saver, a tool to save HLS videos as one file. Early versions focused on finding the main stream among adverts, sending the Referer some CDNs require, and faster parallel downloads. Version 0.2.14 added four interface languages and a progress tab title; 0.2.17 added the Report button; 0.2.18 added direct MP4/WebM files. In 0.2.21 YouTube support and manual URL entry were removed to align with browser store policies. The product was renamed KepVideo — Video Downloader in 0.2.22, and 0.2.23–0.2.26 introduced a refreshed interface with light/dark themes. See the version history.

Privacy

Downloads happen on the user's computer. The extension does not upload videos, cookies or keys. Reports are saved as a local JSON file that the user reviews and shares only if they choose. See the privacy notice.
